Semester Hebrew Courses

Fall 2017: October 17, 2017 - January 4, 2018.

Spring 2018: February 20 - May 31, 2018.

The Hebrew language semester program, also known as the Semester Ulpan, is designed for those who want to immerse themselves in a language acquisition experience that is personally enriching as well as academically demanding. Instruction is offered at all levels from beginners with no knowledge of the language to advanced classes. The program focuses on strengthening all four major skills: writing, reading, speaking and comprehension. Students who only wantto enroll in the semester Ulpan of the International School are considered part-time students. During the academic semesters (September – January and February – June) Hebrew classes meet four days per week, Mondays through Thursdays, for two hours each morning. This program is open to students of the International School, tourists, new and 'old' immigrants, who want to improve their Hebrew skills.

Academics
At the beginning of the semester, students will take a written and oral placement exam. This exam will be used to place students in the most appropriate class for their level of efficiency. The Ulpan classes are relatively small and each student is given a great deal of personal attention and an opportunity to interact with both fellow students and the teacher. In addition to traditional learning through textbooks, classes will also involve computer and video sessions, work in the language laboratory, and student presentations.

For detailed syllabi on each level, see course catalog under Hebrew and Arabic Languages - Semester Programs. For a list of books used in each level click here.

      Why Haifa?

I chose to study at the University of Haifa because I wanted something different. Although Haifa is the third largest city in Israel, a lot of people I know have never been there. I have found since living here that it is one of the most diverse cities in Israel and there is so much to explore! The University of Haifa is not your typical university. As an international student, I’ve met not only other Americans, but also people from Europe, Africa, and Central America.

What do you like most about Haifa?

I love the variety of courses I get to take and the chance to study Hebrew with a native Hebrew speaker. The administrative staff at the International school are amazing and so helpful, they are like your home away from home. Lastly, the environment in Haifa is beautiful. I wouldn’t change my experience abroad for any other place!
